The terms “Grade A” and “100%
Pure” have little meaning in the United
States. Companies are allowed to add those terms
to a concoction if it contains 10% of said oil.
Even that 10% is probably not therapeutic. Most
plants are subjected to toxic herbicides and pesticides
and then harvested at the wrong time. They are then
distilled under high pressure and high temperature
with the aid of chemicals in aluminum distillers.
The final products is stored in aluminum or
containers that alter the chemical properties of
the essential oils.
Only 2% of marketed essential oils are therapeutic-grade. The most reliable indicator of therapeutic-value
is AFNOR certification which differentiates true
therapeutic-grade essential oils from Grade A oils
that have inferior chemistry.
The real story of quality for most essential oils is told in the "For Topical Use Only" fine print found on their labels. This puts the oil in the same category as cosmetics...where there is very little regulation, so the manufacturer has plenty of wiggle room. Most likely the manufacturer isn't purposefully selling poison. It simply has no idea about the quality of the oil because it must depend on brokers and other middlemen. The "For Topical Use Only" disclaimer allows the manufacture to cut corners and provide a "cheap" oil.
Thieves Oil has a Supplement Facts panel on the back of the bottle...just like a box of cereal or bottle of herbs. In other words, the manufacturer is holding itself to a much higher standard...one that puts it within the regulations of the FDA...and has put enough research and care into the ingredients that it is willing to stick its neck on the line and say, "It's okay to eat it if you want to."
